Main Library Planning Study
Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County
Jenkins•Peer recently worked with the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) on a comprehensive planning project to support the development of a new or renovated Main Library in the heart of Charlotte’s Center City. J•PA was selected for the project based on the firm's successful history of work for PLCMC, a proven record for managing complex projects, and the ability to work collaboratively with large, diverse groups on stakeholders.
Work involved an extensive assessment of existing library operations and usage; interviews with library administration, staff and patrons; discussions with potential community partners; and presentations to local government, educational and cultural organizations.
The results of this study have been presented to a variety of stakeholder groups, including the Charlotte City Council, Mecklenburg County Commissioners, the Arts and Science Council, and the Spirit Square Committee, which is collaborating with PLCMC in the revitalization of the block shared by the Library and Spirit Square—an iconic arts venue. Opportunities exist to incorporate residential, retail and parking into the space around and above the Library.
