Dilworth United Methodist Church, built over 125 years ago, stands proud in the quaint neighborhood of Dilworth in Charlotte, NC. The site contains an amalgamation of stone-clad buildings, including two chapels. This conceptual design includes a re-imagination of the larger, Terry Chapel that will be able to accommodate their alternative, eclectic style “Loft” worship service as well as provide a venue for the Dilworth Players, a community theatre outreach of Dilworth United Methodist Church.
The renovation and addition design concepts include a full renovation of the interior, expanded footprint, enclosed connection to the adjacent building, and flexibly to arrange the venue for multiple functions, services, and performances. While maintaining the historic aesthetics of the chapel’s exterior facades and prominence on the site, the concepts create a direct connection to the campus’ interior green courtyard to both bring the outdoors into the space and allow for indoor services and events to expand into and engage the grassy courtyard space.
